Our Little Story

Helen at Bumblebees Day Nursery

Hi, I’m Gemma

I’m the founder of Bumblebees Day Nursery. I’ve got over 20 years experience in the childcare profession and it was always my goal to set up an outstanding day nursery offering the very best childcare for children. I’m supported by my manager, Faye and my deputy managers Karen and Fawn (pictured below).

Bumblebees was opened in September 2006 with a passion to create the very best childcare any parent or carer could wish for. Bumblebees is a purpose-built nursery which can cater for all children from 3 months to 11 years of age. All the children have access to a large and secured multi-purpose garden.

Bumblebees is a family business run by three directors, Gemma Whittington, Jamie Whittington and Ian Bealey. Gemma has over 20 years’ experience in childcare and holds an NNEB and NVQ4, whilst Jamie maintains the administration and finance for the setting. Both Gemma and Jamie work on site and are supported by their full time Manager, Faye Thorning. Faye has been with us since we opened and has helped Bumblebees develop into what it is today, utilising the 20+ years’ experience gained throughout her career in childcare. Ian supports the nursery on an ad-hoc basis when required.

Together we appreciate the vital mix that is needed to provide the very best childcare. Bumblebees, the staff, security and the activities provided are all equally important and deserving of the very highest attention to detail. All the children and their parents or carers can expect to receive top quality care and a friendly welcome.

The real story behind the life of a Nursery/Preschool Teacher ...

As well as teaching children to learn through play, we have to recognise issues in child development, liaise with speech & language, psychologists and psychiatrists, teachers, therapists, undertake 2 year progress checks, be first aid trained, identify special or additional needs, cater for dietary and health requirements, manage complex family issues, look for signs of extremism and terrorism, safeguarding and child protections issues, drugs, alcohol & mental health issues, domestic violence, health and safety requirements, undertaking risk assessments, substances hazardous to health, infection control, food hygiene. To adhere to Ofsted, the Local Authority, Environmental Health and the Health Protection agency. We plan, observe and assess children based on their characteristics of effective learning, we see schemas in their play and plan appropriate next steps to ensure they are ready for their next stage of learning. We care for these children as if they are our own, we hug, we reassure, we praise, we celebrate their achievements. We ensure children learn to share, take turns, be kind, have excellent manners, socialise with their peers. We go the extra mile for parents wherever we can, we are there for them when they are experiencing difficulties, struggling to cope, when they feel there is no one there to help or listen.

But apparently all we do all day is "play"!

🥰Using all of our senses to explore real items. 🥰
We started by exploring the items on their own with our hands and mouths. We then extended our own play with discovering which items fit through the tubes. The suprise of the items appearing out of the bottom of tube gave us lots of smiles!
